Dipankar Bhattacharya

Dipankar Bhattacharya is an Indian politician. He is the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation. Bhattacharya succeeded Vinod Mishra as the leader of the party in 1998.

Son of a railway employee, Dipankar Bhattacharya was born in Guwahati [Assam] in December 1960. He Studied in Ramkrishna Mission Vidyalaya Narendrapur near Kolkata, as a student of Dr Bijoy Bera and stood first in Higher Secondary Examination in 1979. He then joined the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and became active in CPI(ML) politics. Within years he become a professional revolutionary, though he took his M. Stat degree in due course. As a responsible cadre of CPI(ML). He later worked as the General Secretary of the Indian Peoples Front and then as the General Secretary of the party's Trade Union wing All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU). He was elected a member of Central Committee and Political Bureau of CPI(ML) in December 1987. After the sudden demise of Vinod Mishra - the general secretary of the party since 1975 - in 1998, Dipankar was unanimously elected to the post.
